Let’s worry about the poor tuber

There is a good chance that potato prices will increase this year, as production in key producing states is expected to drop due to unfavourable weather conditions.

Production in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal – which top the list of producing states – is expected to be lower by 13.6 percent and 10 percent respectively, The Economic Times said in a report.

It quoted farmers as saying that lower production will push farmgate prices for potato higher by between six and 14 rupees, after a bumper crop in 2014 brought prices down sharply and led to suicides among potato growers.
