China’s coal production falls as economy slows

China’s coal production in 2015 was down 3.5 percent to 3.68 billion tonnes, as a slowing economy prompted industry to cut back production and the government took drastic steps to cut pollution, according to official data released by the National Bureau of Statistics.

A huge supply glut ina slowing econmy has left the indsutry battling with lower prices, as several coal consuming industries such as steel, cement and power cut back produciton dues to overcapacity.

China has banned new coal mines for the next three years and asked coal producers to cut back production in its attempt to bring some sanity into a volatile market.
