India’s nuclear power capacity set to more than double by 2022

India’s nuclear power generation capacity will more than double in the next six years as current projects are commissioned and construction begins on the new one sanctioned, a government statement said.

It said the capacity will rise to 13,480 megawatt by 2022 from the current 5,780 megawatt. The share of nuclear power in India’s total electricity generation was 3.3 percent in the April 2015-January 2016 period.

The government has cleared financial sanction for the planned projects and entered into enabling agreements with foreign countries for technical cooperation, the statement said.
