Only half of India’s mines functional, minister says

About half of all mines in India are working, most of them in the private sector, the mines minister told parliament in a written response to a question.

Narendra Singh Tomar said that according to the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) while there were 3,783 mines in the country only 1,845 of them were functional.

Of these working mines, 1658 mines were in the private sector, he said.

During inspection of mines in the current fiscal year, the IBM had pointed out 32 environmental violations
