India likely to export up to 2 million tonnes of sugar this season – ISMA

India is expected to export up to 2 million tonnes of sugar in the current marketing season, the All India Sugar Mills (ISMA) said.

The trade body said sugar mills in the world’s second-biggest sugar producer had already contracted 1.4 million tonnes for exports and another 500,000 tonnes to 600,000 tonnes could be shipped by September end when the marketing season ends.

In the current season, the mills have already produced 22.13 million tonnes of sugar, close to last year’s 22.16 million tonnes in the same period, ISMA said, adding the two straight years of drought had forced 189 sugar mills to shut operations, nearly half in the top sugar producing state of Maharashtra.
