India launches e-trading platform for its national agriculture market

India launched a pilot e-platform for its national agriculture market, an initiative Prime Minister Narendra Modi said will bring in systemic transparency to benefit farmers.

The pilot programme links 21 mandis across eight states, but the plan is to bring in 200 mandis on the platform by September this year and raise the number to 585 by March 2018.

Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh said the federal government was keen to push the programme and complete it a year ahead if states cooperate.

The government has said it intends to double farmer incomes by 2022 by pushing several initiatives, including an online trading platform that will give better returns to farmers for their crops.
