Asian countries increased their oil imports from Iran by 50 per cent in March compared to the same period in the previous year, Mehr news agency reported.

It said imports by India and South Korea had risen sharply after nuclear sanctions against Iran were lifted earlier this year.

Customs and shipping data indicate that the four major Asian customers — China, India, Japan, South Korea — bought a total of 1.56 million barrels/day day from Iran in March, up by 49.9 percent from a year earlier, according to the report.

India imported 506,100 barrels/day from Iran in March, the highest in the past five years, while South Korean imports were at 264,452 barrels/day, it said.
