After cheese, the United States to buy millions of eggs to help farmers

Days after it announced to buy millions of dollars worth of cheese to help dairy farmers, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said it would buy a substantial amount of shell eggs and egg products to remove market surplus and help producers battling low prices.

The $11.7 million purchase will help hungry American families and other vulnerable populations by deploying a high-quality source of affordable protein where it is needed most.

“We are also pleased USDA will purchase both shell eggs and processed egg products,” said United Egg Producers President Chad Gregory. “This balanced approach will be beneficial at a difficult time for the egg farming community,” he said.

The USDA said last week that it would spend an estimated$20 million to buy 11 million pounds of cheese from the market in its attempt to remove a market surplus that has depressed prices.
