India among top egg producer countries, but availablity still poor

India is among the top egg-producing nations in the world, but availability of eggs per person is only one-third of what experts say it should be, Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Radha Mohan Singh has said.

According to a government statement, Singh said at an event to mark the World Egg Day that the availability is 63 eggs per person per year in the country, while as per National Nutrition Institute this should be about 180 eggs per person.

The minister said India’s poultry industry produced about 83 billion eggs, but the country needed to take several steps to raise production to improve the health of children and benefit poultry farmers, inlcuding raising awareness about the nutrition value of eggs.
