Panasonic Life Solutions commissions 7 MW agro-voltaic project in Maharashtra

Panasonic Life Solutions, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Panasonic, has commissioned a 7-megawatt (MW) agro-voltaic solar power plant in Maharashtra. The Power Finance Corporation of India has funded the project.

The project, located at Degoan in the Dhule district of Maharashtra, is spread over a 50-acres of land. It has been commissioned by Gro Solar Energy, a special purpose vehicle founded for this project by Gulabsing Girase, Rajdeep Girase, Abhijeet Girase, and Sonal Patel.

The agro-voltaic project will use 30,300 Panasonic’s ‘Anchor’ make of polycrystalline solar modules “Made in India” installed along with string inverters to maintain high uptime.

The solar electricity generated will be evacuated at the nearest substation to power homes across multiple villages in the vicinity and provide the much-needed daytime power to the farmers for irrigation activities.

“The project will add about 15,891MW solar energy and assist in eliminating a total of 14,300 tonnes of CO2 emissions over its lifetime,” the company said in its press release.

Project developer Gro Solar Energy benefits from a power purchase agreement with Maharashtra Power Generation Company Limited – MAHAGENCO through a power sale agreement. The project was installed under the Government of Maharashtra’s “Mukhyamantri Saur Krishi Vahini Yojana” to energize the agricultural feeders in Maharashtra.

Agro-voltaic projects are designed to integrate solar energy generation along with farming. It consists of using the same area of land to obtain both solar energy and agricultural products.

“We aim to enhance our sustainability practices by adding the possibility to reap agriculture yield by planting low-height crops between solar module tables by extending the pitch and the height,” said Gulabsing Girase, one of the directors of Gro Solar Energy. He added that it would lead to agricultural yield, save water for cleaning and ensure a less dusty environment resulting in higher gains from the plant.
